Preface

By surface modification, we often refer to modification of the surface of an implant so that better integration of the implant with surrounding tissues can be achieved. It has rarely been put in the same context as biosensors. In our journey to develop biosensors with enhanced performance by taking advantage of nanotechnology, we learned that surface modification actually plays some crucial roles in affecting the performance of these biosensors. This book provides a whole-spectrum view of the interdependence between surface modification (both physically and chemically) and key parts of a biosensor, including electrode surface area, electrode functionalization, enzyme stability, and mass transport. In Chap. 1, biosensors are defined and their basic requirements are discussed with respect to other types of sensors. A brief overview of the two major components of biosensors—sensitive elements and signal transduction techniques—is given. For the sensitive elements, the most commonly used ones including antibodies, nucleotides, enzymes, cells, and synthetic molecules
