If we look around us, we can see various lifelines such as roads and railways created with bridges, tunnels, cuts and fills, waterworks and sewage and electricity laid out as a network. These lifelines make up social infrastructures that are essential to our comfortable lifestyles and vibrant economic activities. At the same time, various disaster prevention facilities protecting our lives and properties from earthquakes, cyclones (or typhoons) and rain storms are also extremely important. Do we not take these social infrastructures for granted, thinking “they will be always there, fully functioning”? Have we forgotten that talented engineers are supporting our social infrastructures through their constant efforts?
