Ewing Marion Kauffman considered entrepreneurship to be one of the most important features in the U.S. economy. A core mission of the foundation he established was the expansion of knowledge about the entrepreneurial process. In supporting this objective, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has been a major sponsor of the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) research program. This research project undertook the task of expanding our knowledge of the earliest stage of the entrepreneurial process. The focus is on understanding the circumstances that cause people to attempt to start a new business and which factors facilitate and which represent barriers to successfully implementing a new firm. The project is interdisciplinary in its coverage of potential factors so it can evaluate the independent contribution from a broad array of hypotheses developed from economics, sociology, psychology, management sciences, and the burgeoning field of entrepreneurial studies.
