INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF ASSOCIATIONS OF PHARMACEUTICAL PHYSICIANS VOLUME 20 NUMBER 2 2002

Letter from Dr Domenico Criscuolo, President of IFAPP Dear Colleagues Let me take this opportunity to start an open and sincere dialogue with all of you: it is not so easy to have a ‘virtual’ dialogue, but it can be a useful communication tool. Of course, I would very much appreciate any comments and suggestions you may have to improve our communication; but here is a start. First of all, it is my duty to update you on the status of Dr Jane Ganter and Dr Sander Becker. As you may know, these two friends and colleagues of ours were attending the 12th International Conference on Pharmaceutical Medicine in Cancun. On the evening of 5 May, while walking back to the hotel after dinner, they were hit by a bus; their conditions appeared immediately to be very serious. In fact, they were transported the next day to US hospitals for appropriate care. Jane was moved to an intensive care unit in San Antonio, where she was slowly recovering, and about one month ago she was able to be moved to Oregon, her home. Sander was in a critical condition and was moved from Cancun to an intensive care unit in Miami, and he was moved only recently to Sydney, Australia, his home. He is now out of the deep coma he was in for nearly two months, and is undergoing intensive physical therapy at a rehabilitation hospital in Ryde, near Sydney. Let me ask you to pray for the complete recovery of both of them. IFAPP’s activities continue as planned; the renewed Executive Committee, which will help me during the next two years, has already started the usual teleconference meetings, in order to keep track of ongoing tasks. The more important appointments have been:

On 12 July 2002, Juan Lahuerta attended, as representative of the IFAPP’s Council for Education, a meeting in Basel between IFAPP, the Drug Information Association (DIA), the European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS) and the European Center of Pharmaceutical Medicine (ECPM). This first meeting aimed at planning activities relating to harmonizing education in pharmaceutical medicine in various countries. On 17 July 2002, Mirela Barbu and I attended a meeting in Basel of the Scientific Committee of the 13th International Conference on Pharmaceutical Medicine, jointly organized by IFAPP, Schweizerische Gesellschaft fu¨r Pharmazeutische Medizin (SGPM) and the Swiss Association of Pharmaceutical Professionals (SwAPP) to be held 19–22 September 2004. At this meeting the scientific programme was reviewed and finalized, for further distribution to all National Associations. Contacts with the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) are in progress, thanks to Jane Barrett, to finalize the programme of the next EMEA–IFAPP conference, planned to be held in London at the EMEA on 21 February 2003. Please note this date in your diary. Contacts are in progress, thanks to Chris Allen, to organize a similar event i
