Foreword

Nisyros Volcano, which is located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Volcanic Arc, was formed during the Pliocene–Pleistocene age. The entire island is a stratovolcano with conical shaped area of approximately 42 km2 and a base diameter of about 8 km. The most characteristic feature is an almost circular caldera with a diameter of 3.8 km and an average depth of 250 m, which was created in the central part of the island at least 24,000 years ago, after intense explosive activity. Since then, the volcanic activity remains in a dormant stage with high geodynamic activity and a large hydrothermal system being expressed in thermal springs and fumaroles. The most recent hydrothermal eruptions took place in 1871–1873 and 1887 that left large explosion crater holes behind. Today, the post-volcanic activit
