FOREWORD In 1980 a very successful Meeting took place at the University of Texas at Arlington (U.S.A.) to celebrate the70-th birthday of the famous mathematician Lamberto Cesario Professor Cesari has been for decades in the Faculty of several Institutions of high prestige in the United States, thus honouring the Italian mathematical school, and has always kept close connections with the Italian mathematicians. ThiS led several of his friends and admirers to organize a Meeting in his honour also in Italy and precisely in Bologna, where he was born and was professor at the University for several years before moving to the United States. To this end in the beginning of 1981 an Organizing Committee was formed by Professors D. Graffi (President), V. Boffi (Treasurer), V.E. Bononcini (Secretary), R. Conti, I. Galligani, G. Grioli, R. Nardini (Secretary), A. Pescarini, L. Salvadori, C. Vinti. This Committee obtained cooperation and financial support from several institutions in order to organize an International Meeting in honour of Lamberto Cesari. An Honour Committee was thus formed, composed of (in alphabetical order): Professor Renzo Predi, President, Banca del Honte di Bologna e Ravenna; Professor Carlo Ri zzoli, Rettore, Universi Ui di 'Bologna; Professor Raffaele Spongano, President, Accademia delle Scienze dell'Istituto di Bologna; Dott. Lanfranco Turci, President, Regione Emilia-Romagna; Prof. Renato Zangheri, Mayor di Bologna. Many thanks are due to all members of the Honour Committee for the active interest they took in the organisation of the Meeting, which took place May 3-7, 1982, on the subject "Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization". The lectures delivered are collected in the present volume. The Organiz
