Foreword

In May 2019, over 200  million Europeans elected 751 Members of European Parliament. With more than 50 percent, the turnout was the highest it has ever been in the past 25 years and represents an increase of 8.3 percentage points from the previous election in 2014. To illustrate, more citizens were entitled to vote at the European elections than the United States has inhabitants as a whole. In contrast to certain predictions made by political commentators and spectators, the election result gives a clear pro-European mandate for more European engagement, more European solutions and more cooperation on a European level.
