The US healthcare system has long struggled with providing care that is affordable, accessible, and delivered in a manner that is responsive to the needs of its most vulnerable populations. Today, as we face what seems to be a perfect storm where a pandemic challenges the very foundation of our social fabric and our collective biomedical knowledge and reveals the devastating effects of systemic racism and a legacy of environmental neglect and exploitation on health and well-being, these authors offer unique perspectives and strategies based on nursing’s perennial wisdom that embraces an integrative approach to care. Integrative nursing calls us to care for the whole person, recognizing that context, including the social, relational, geopolitical, cultural, and temporal aspects of a person’s life, frames both the interventions that we choose and the manner in which we counsel and guide individuals, families, and communities.
