The prevalence of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate, with more than 300 million obese people worldwide. The increase in the prevalence of obesity has been most pronounced in developed countries. For example, in the United States, the prevalence of obesity has doubled over the past 30 years, with more than a third of adults meeting criteria for obesity based on a body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2.
