Obituary In memoriam Professor Barbara Małecka (1957–2013)

Ó Akade´miai Kiado´, Budapest, Hungary 2013

Professor Barbara Małecka, a chemist working mainly in the field of thermal analysis, a researcher, lecturer, and teacher at the AGH University of Science and Technology (AGH-UST, Krakow, Poland), passed away after a long battle with a serious illness on July 24, 2013. With her death, we lost not only an important person in the scientific community of thermal analysts, but also a good colleague. Barbara Małecka was born on December 14, 1957, in Krako´w. Her whole scientific and professional life was associated with the AGH-UST, Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics. She graduated from this university in 1981 with a M.Sc. in materials science, and then gained a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1989. She received habilitation in 2005, and since 2009 she worked as a University Professor at AGH-UST. In 2004, she has performed a scientific internship at the Univerisite´ de Provence, Laboratoire MADIREL in Marseille, France. The main fields of Prof. Małecka’s scientific interest were gas–solid reactions, anticorrosion coatings, heterogeneous kinetics, and thermal decomposition of salts and oxides. She was an author or coauthor of over 100

publications and conference papers, as well as 4 Polish patents, some of which were applied in the industry. Professor Barbara Małecka published results of her scientific works inter alia in the following journals: Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Thermochimica Acta, Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, and Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis. She was also invited to review scientific publications in Polish and international journals. Moreover, she coordinated or participated in several research projects. The contribution of Professor Barbara Małecka to the scientific life in the field of thermal analysis and calorimetry is very large. She cooperated with numerous Polish and foreign scientific societies and took part in many scientific events. She has been a member of the Polish Society of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis (PTKAT) for nearly 30 years. Since 2006, she was a vice-president and then, since September 2012, a president of this society. Professor Małecka was also a member of International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry ICTAC, since 2000, and since 2006, she was a chairwoman of one of working committees of this organization—Thermal Reactivity of Solids Committee. Moreover, she was a member of Polish Chemical Society. She also worked actively in the Student Scientific Society at AGH-UST which she chaired from 2004, and was its vice-president since 2010. Professor Małecka has become known as an excellent organizer of scientific life in the field of thermal analysis and calorimetry not only in Poland but also in the world. Starting from 1996, she was a co-organizer of cyclic Schools of Thermal Analysis which were very popular especially among young thermal analysts. She also coorganized other conferences, among them an international conference—9th
