Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome and Quality of Life
Abstract: Sleep quantity and quality strongly influence quality of life (QOL). Additionally, an individual’s QOL can alter sleep. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and > Insomnia are common medical conditions. If left untreated, OSAHS increases a person’s chance of having medical problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. These sleep disorders also contribute to many motor vehicle and industrial accidents. Trends in current outcome research consider counting the dead inadequate for disease and treatment assessment. Quality of life issues increasingly receive attention and have become the central core of many research studies. QOL instruments are now routinely included as part of the evaluation regimen in large clinical trials. Although, definitions for QOL vary, one common element relates to health care issues and is generally termed Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL). HRQOL attempt to address the impact(s) of disease or its treatment on patient’s life, from his or her point of view. In this chapter we review a variety of instruments developed to assess QOL in individuals with OSAHS and how this sleep-related breathing disorder adversely affect QOL.
