Acknowledgments

This book started after an interview about crime in resource-based boomtowns with AC Shilton, a reporter with the Pacific Standard magazine. Katie Kilkenny, an editor with Pacific Standard, encouraged me to participate in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) discussion in June 2015 called “The Dark Side of Oil Boomtowns.” The AMA came to the attention of Mara Berkoff from Palgrave Macmillan, who requested a book proposal, and after two years writing about resource-based boomtowns (and considerable patience on the part of the Palgrave Macmillan editors), this book appeared in print. Although only the author’s name appears on a book’s front cover, getting a manuscript from an idea to a finished work is the product of a small army of individuals who invested their time, support, and insights. In order to finish the manuscript, police officers (both former and current), security officials, experts on rural affairs, fellow academics, and government researchers graciously shared their time, ideas, and suggestions. I couldn’t have finished this work without their help. A group of scholars specialize in the study of boomtowns—Christopher O’Connor, Carol Archbold, Dheeshana Jayasun
