Pediatric Asthma: Therapeutic Options Reviewed ‘The prevalence of pediatric asthma has risen sharply over the past 30 years, as has its impact on childhood morbidity and associated costs’, says Dr Robert Wood from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, US, in a recent editorial in JAMA. He comments that ‘these statistics are of particular concern because the understanding of asthma has clearly improved, as have the medications available for its control’. Reviewing the current therapeutic options available, Dr Woods notes that the recognition of asthma as a chronic inflammatory disease has led to greater emphasis being placed on the use of anti-inflammatory medication. Inhaled corticosteroids have become the principal treatment for persistent asthma, replacing agents such as theophylline and short-acting β-agonists, he says.
