Polysubstance addiction, drug abuse and withdrawal symptoms: case report An approximately 15-year-old boy developed polysubstance addiction following treatment with morphine, zopiclone, alprazolam and abuse of bucinnazine. He also developed withdrawal symptoms following withdrawal of morphine [routes not stated; not all dosage and outcomes stated]. The boy, who had a complex medical history, presented to a hospital at the age of 28-years with a 13-year history of polysubstance addiction (since an approximate age of 15-year). Anamnesis showed that in 2005, he had developed addiction to bucinnazine following its continued use for chronic chest pain. He started abusing bucinnazine at small doses, and eventually increased the dose of bucinnazine to 1200mg per day. In 2006, he started receiving morphine 200mg every 2 months for the chest pain, and eventually developed addiction. During withdrawal of morphine, he experienced withdrawal symptoms including increased tearing, yawning, insomnia, and agitation. Since 2006, he had received various non-surgical treatments for drug addiction, but experienced repeated relapses. He also received hypnotic therapy with zopiclone and alprazolam, and developed addition to these drugs. In 2008, his chest pain improved with unspecified traditional Chinese medicine. However, the addiction to bucinnazine, morphine, alprazolam and zopiclone persisted. On current presentation, the boy was scheduled to undergo surgery for the drug addiction. In July 2018, he was admitted and underwent bilateral anterior capsulotomy and deep brain stimulation of nucleus accumbens. Following the surgery, he reported reduced drug craving. At the 12-month follow-up, he reported no drug cravings and had stopped using drugs. Zhu R, et al.
