This article addresses the potential areas for outsourcing partnerships in medical information and issues to consider when selecting a vendor. Suggested criteria with which to measure vendor performance once a program h a s been initiated are provided. Continual evaluation of the process and services will determine if the outsourcing partnership continues to support the business needs of the company. INTRODUCTION OUTSOURCING IS THE process of using vendors to perform a function outside the company. Historically, organizations have outsourced activities such as catering, payroll, and benefits, taking advantage of vendors’ expertise and technology. Outsourcing has increased considerably in the recent past due to contemporary business needs, important changes in telecommunications and computer technologies, and the availabil-
