■ Over the past few years, there has been an increase in the number of paroxetine [Paxil] recipients committing suicide in Japan because of the drug’s side effect, according to the country’s Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry and the semi-governmental Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency. In fiscal 2004, one Paxil recipient committed suicide. This number increased to 11 and 15 in 2005 and 2006, respectively. GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Paxil, has advised patients to consult their doctors before discontinuing Paxil. Mainichi Daily News.
