Paul Siffert Is New JMR Associate Editor in Europe Paul Siffert has been appointed European associate editor for the Journal of Materials Research, replacing Werner Lutze, who recently moved to the United States. Over the past decade Siffert has played a major role in developing European collaborations in the field of advanced materials. He was strongly involved with the creation of the European Materials Research Society (EMRS) and currently is president of the International Union of Materials Research Societies. He has been instrumental in cultivating close connections between E-MRS and the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, and the European Commission. In announcing Siffert's acceptance of the JMR editorial post, former JMR editor-in-chief Walter L. Brown commented: "We are delighted that Paul Siffert will join JMR as European associate editor.
Paul has played a prominent role in the growth of E-MRS and will bring valuable insight from that experience to the continuing growth of JMR in Europe." Siffert is research director of the Centre
National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Strasbourg, France, and heads the CNRS Laboratoire de Physique et Applications des Semiconducteurs (PHASE). Primary research activities at PHASE center around nuclear radiation sensors, including growth of semiconductor crystals; modification of materials, especially using energetic beams of ions or photons; and photovoltaic cells based on bulk or thin film materials. Siffert holds two dozen patents on semiconductors and has written several hundred scientific papers, including some books. He has also chaired or cochaired numerous conferences and symposia. Siffert joins Shigeyuki Somiya, associate editor in Japan, and Robert Laudise, new editor-in-chief of Journal of Materials Research (see article in the October MRS Bulletin, p. 74) in the solicitation, acquisition, and review of JMR manuscripts.
Werner Lutze to Head Center for Radioactive Waste Management in New Mexico Werner Lutze, who has served the Journal of Materials Research since its inau-
guration in 1985, is leaving his role as jMR's European associate editor to accept a position as director of the newly founded Center for Radioactive Waste Management at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque. He will also begin a tenured professorship there. An outgrowth of UNM's involvement with the Waste Management Education and Research Consortium, the Center is being created to lead a long-term commitment in radioactive waste management research. The Center's primary functions will be to provide a coordinated organization for UNM researchers across its campus and to provide a focal point for developing collaborations between the University and government, industry, and federal laboratory groups across the United States. Major areas of research will include radioactive waste cleanup, environmental restoration, and management of defense and commercial waste. Lutze began as a principal editor of JMR in 1985 and assumed the European
