My desire to explore more deeply the topic of employability in rural economies originated during my PhD studies in Education at the University of Macerata in central Italy, one of the oldest universities in Europe (founded in 1290), which “serves” a rural and peri-urban region characterised by many of the features defining “rural economy” or “local labour markets”. I am very grateful to graduates of my university, those who have left the region as well as those who have remained, many of whom have uncertain work conditions, and many of whom have chosen different pathways than those for which they studied. They have taught me how transition happens beyond narratives. My deepest thanks to Professor Alessio Cavicchi, agricultural economist and unique colleague and friend. I thank Sheila Beatty for editing the English version of the manuscript. Last but not least, my sincere gratitude to the editors Rebecca Wyde and Eleanor Christie for their professional support and valuable insights throughout the entire process of writing and publication.
