Both microstructure and composition of these micro/nano-particles composites were characterized by HRTEM (high resolution transmission electron microscope), EMP (electron microprobe) and nano-probe EDS (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Experimental results showed that the products have multi-levels in structure like nebulae. The aggregation of Au/Ru nano-particles can be extremely diminished by using SiO2 micro-particles as matrices. Distortions of the atomic lattices of Au and Ru nano-crystallites were often observed in the surface of these nano-particles. Moreover, nano-EDS measurements revealed that Au and Ru nano-particles are always separately embedded in SiO2 matrices, no alloy of them is observed. INTRODUCTION Metal and semi-conductor nano-crystallites have attracted much attention recently due to the fact that many interesting applications exist for these nano-particles, such as for high performance optoelectronic devices [1,2]. In recent years, a great deal of work has been carried out laying a special emphasis on the nano-composites embedded in some dielectric matrices, such as glass and polymer, for the advantage of stabilizing dots and being adapted to device manufacturing process [3-5]. Because doped glassy SiO2 is becoming increasingly important in modern display and lighting technology [6-8], some metals and semiconductor nano-particles doped in SiO2 matrices have been widely studied. Here, we present the results of the study on the preparation and structure of the Au (Ru) nano-particles embedded in micro SiO2 matrices which were produced for the application as advanced display materials. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The Au (Ru)-SiO2 micro/nano-particles composites were prepared by Sol-gel process using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS, Si(OC2H5)4). The analytically pure TEOS alcohol solution were mixed with HAuCl4 ethanol solution and RuCl3 ethanol solution first, and then homogenized by a magnetic stirrer for about 25 minutes. A few drops of concentrated hydrogen fluoride were then
