Dear colleagues, Being a primary care provider is one of the most rewarding practices in the field of medicine. We take care of the young and the old, the sick and the well, and everything in between. We build and grow long-term relationships with patients and their families. We work with patients to improve what they can, yet are still there for them when we cannot fix or cure their illness. And we learn—from our patients as they undergo their own personal and healthcare journeys, from our colleagues who teach us and push us to improve, and from our own successes and mistakes. I suspect that most primary care providers—known for their breadth of knowledge and experience—do not begin their careers with a goal of caring for solid organ transplant recipients. In fact, it can be quite daunting to try to understand what these patients have gone through and partner with them to maintain and improve their well-being. It may seem like something best left solely to specialty care. This book was created with the idea that primary care providers can and should have a role in the care of solid organ transplant recipients.
