Branch portal vein thrombosis and superficial vein thrombosis: 2 case reports A retrospective study of 62 patients conducted between December 2014 and April 2018 at 2 tertiary academic medical center in Israel, described 2 pateints [ages and sexes not stated], who developed branch portal vein thrombosis or superficial vein thrombosis following off label treatment with prothrombin complex concentrate for reversal of anticoagulation effect [dosage and outcomes not stated]. The patients were treated with unspecified Xa inhibitors. Out of the 2 patients, one patient had septic shock secondary to ascending cholangitis and underwent urgent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with papillotomy with excision of a large bile stone and pus. The another patient underwent an urgent exploratory laparotomy for a small-bowel obstruction and lysis of adhesions. Before the surgery, both the patient received off label IV prothrombin complex concentrate [Beriplex; 4-factor prothrombin concentrate complex]. However, in patient, who underwent ERCP, a CT scan confirmed a diagnosis of provoked asymptomatic branch portal vein thrombosis after 14 days. The patient, who underwent exploratory laparotomy, developed superficial vein thrombosis 5 days following the administration of prothrombin complex concentrate. Barzilai M, et al.
