Abstract A new species, Pseudacanthus alani n. sp., is described from cloud forest in Oaxaca, Mexico. This species is similar to Pseudacanthus junctistriatus Kuwert 1891 in size, shape of antennal lamella, and the absence of pubescence on abdominal terga, but has larger internal tubercles, an apex of central tubercle that is not free, glabrous elytral humerus, pubescent mesepisternum and mesepimeron and mesosternal scar, and male sexual characters. Photographs are provided of the head, male and female genitalia, and plectrum. Additionally, a taxonomic key to species of Pseudacanthus Kaup 1869 is provided, complemented with photographs of diagnostic characters. Finally, we propose two junior synonyms: Pseudacanthus solidus (Arrow 1907) n. syn. of Pseudacanthus junctistriatus and Pseudacanthus truquii Kuwert 1891 n. syn. of Pseudacanthus mexicanus (Truqui 1857).
Introduction Pseudacanthus Kaup 1869 is a genus in the tribe Proculini, with a Mesoamerican Montane distribution pattern (ReyesCastillo 1982, Reyes-Castillo & Halffter 1978), that inhabits mountain cloud forests of the Mexican Transition Zone (ZTM) between 450 and 3050 m a.s.l. (Reyes-Castillo & Chamé-Vázquez 2014). According to the diagnosis of the genus proposed by Reyes-Castillo (1970), nomenclatural changes and new species description, this genus is composed by 10 species (Truqui 1857, Bates 1886, Kuwert 1891, Arrow 1907, Hincks 1949, Reyes-Castillo 1970, Reyes-Castillo 1974, ReyesCastillo & Schuster 1983, Reyes-Castillo & Castillo 1986, Reyes-Castillo & Chamé-Vázquez 2014), nine of which are distributed in Mexico (Table 1). Three species are known only from type material: Pseudacanthus obesus (Bates 1886), Pseudacanthus truquii Kuwert 1891, and Pseudacanthus solidus (Arrow 1907), of which P. solidus could be a synonym of Pseudacanthus junctistriatus Kuwert 1891 according to
Reyes-Castillo & Chamé-Vázquez (2014). Boucher (2006) transferred P. obesus to Proculejus Kaup 1868 and Pseudacanthus nigidiodes (Hincks 1949) and Pseudacanthus violetae Reyes-Castillo & Castillo 1986 to Undulifer Kaup 1869. However, following Schuster & Cano (2008) and Reyes-Castillo & Chamé-Vázquez (2014), who rejected the nomenclatural changes to Undulifer, we continue to place these two species in Pseudacanthus. Here, we describe a new species, di
