PREFACE
Pseudodifferentlal operators, which originated as a powerful tool in the study of partial differential equations, have now become also a field of independent interest. This Oberwolfach conference presented the opportunity of bringing together many of the world's leading workers in pseudodifferential operators and their applications so that all could learn of and discuss the latest developments in the field. Thirtyfive lectures were given on a wide variety of topics, including the following: Nonlinear hyperbolic equations; Pseudodifferential operator calculus and asymptotic expansions; Operators on manifolds with singularities; Boundary value problems; Fourier integral operators, Toeplitz operators and index theory; Frechet algebras; LP boundedness. The papers in this volume are, with a few exceptions, expanded versions of lectures given during the conference. We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all the participants in this exciting conference and to the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach who made available to us their outstanding facilities and generous hospitality. We also thank E. Schrohe and F. Ali Mehmeti and the secretary U. Schack for their help. Our thanks also go to Springer Verlag for accepting this volume for publication and for their kind cooperation. H.O.
