Multi-system toxicities: 4 case reports In a retrospective study of 16 patients within the European Drug Emergencies Network (Euro-DEN) Plus project, conducted in Switzerland between May 2012 and July 2019, four patients (two women and two men) aged 24–53 years were described, who developed acute intoxications, manifesting as muscle spasms, anxiety, psychosis, aggression, agitation, delusional parasitosis, hallucinations, hypertension or coma following administration of amfetamine, methadone, tramadol or unspecified benzodiazepines for recreational purposes [amounts, routes, times to reactions onsets and outcomes not stated]. The patients were admitted following recreational use of amfetamine (two patients), methadone (one patient) or tramadol (one patient); three of these 4 patients were concomitantly using other street drugs, whereas two patients were also administering unspecified benzodiazepines. The patients developed acute intoxications (minor, moderate or severe). One patient developed muscle spasms and anxiety, one patient developed psychosis and aggression, one patient developed agitation, delusional parasitosis, hallucinations and psychoses and the remaining one patient developed hypertension or coma. All the patients were sedated. Treatments included administration of unspecified IV fluids, treatment with naloxone and flumazenil and sedation in two patients. The patient who developed coma required intubation. Eventually, the patients were discharged, shifted to psychiatry clinic or admitted to ICU. Scholz I, et al.
