Geostatistics has become an important part of the petroleum industry workflow for reservoir characterization. During the last years, more so than in the earlier days, the field of petroleum geostatistics has started to incorporate sophisticated geological modeling, (geo)physical and (geo)chemical relations. This integration of various models and data types in a consistent probabilistic framework will improve our ability to make reliable predictions of reservoir variables, and it will facilitate communication between previously separated disciplines. In these changing times, the new book by Pyrcz and Deutsch is certainly welcome. The 430-page, double-column book is published by Oxford University Press. It is a handbook containing a lot of modeling and methodological tools that are useful for geostatistical reservoir modeling. As the authors state: ‘our aim is not to look for the best tools for a specific reservoir, but rather to collect diverse information into one book’. Thus, it is an undertaking to fully address the amount of content in this book. However, it would be very rewarding if one has been through most of the material, and can then use it as a handbook for a whole variety of models, methods and tools. The book is, therefore, a valuable addition to the bookshelf of industry or academic geostatisticians, or to that of geologists, geophysicists and engineers using geostatistics as part of their work processes. It would also be valuable for graduate students and possibly high-level undergraduates. Pyrcz has established himself as a recognized researcher who is very knowledgeable about both geology and geostatistics. His skills are exemplified clearly in the book through the strengthening of the linkage between geology and geostatistical practice. Deutsch has a long and very productive career in the geostatistics community. He was the sole author of the first edition of this book in 2002.

The second edition of ‘Geostatistical reservoir modeling’ is a largely revised book compared to the first version, with much more focus on the geological concepts. The differences are so considerable that one might wonder why this is a second version of the first. Even though some parts are more or less the same as in the first version, the structure has largely changed so the old material is not easily recognized. The following list contains some changes in chapter indices between the two versions (first in parentheses): 2.2 (2), 2.3 (4), 2.4 (5), 4.4 (7), 4.6 (8), 4.7 (9) and 5.3 (10). The second edition is structured according to modeling principles and prerequisites (Chapters 2 and 3), modeling methods (Chapter 4) and model applications (Chapter 5). These chapters are reviewed briefly next: Chapters 2 and 3 cover the ge
