Foreword
I know Dr. Sunderasan and his work from his days as a Ph.D. student in Vienna. And from the very beginning two things characterize him, one personal (very eager to learn and to engage in research) and the second concerns his fresh views on alternative energy in particular solar energy (PV, primarily) that contrast so starkly the thinking in the industrialized world. His propositions are: (i) alternative energy and solar power in particular must succeed in the market (and not in the game for subsidies) and (ii) that developing countries with their lack or unreliable supply due to their poor infrastructure, the lack of a grid, the many blackouts, the costly technologies diesels are the area where solar power should have a comparative advantage. This contrasts the fact that Germany is proud as the leading in number of solar panel installations yet having world class infrastructure and a summer a German poet of the 19th century called ‘mild winters’ (although global warming has changed that a bit, but just writing this foreword at the beginning of September, we had snow fall down to 1000m elevation).
