Software engineering, the process of developing software intensive systems, is a complex area. This chapter introduces software engineering as well as the potential benefits in capturing, maintaining, and reusing rationale to support it.

The Search for Meaning
At the risk of appearing to exaggerate, I will argue that the pursuit of rationale in engineering is nothing less than a search for meaning. On the face of it, capturing, recording, and perusing rationale in support of software engineering is a worthy software management activity, whose benefits are well documented and accepted.
