1 Preface This Special Issue is one of two dedicated to the 60th birthday of Professor Tomasz Kapitaniak, Head of Division of Dynamics at Lodz University of Technology, Poland. Tomasz is a worldwide well-known expert in nonlinear dynamics. He graduated at the Lodz University of Technology in 1982 (M.Sc. in Mechanics), again at the Lodz University in 1985 (M.Sc. in Mathematics) and got his Ph.D. in 1985, followed by a D.Sc. 3 years later. Tomasz became Professor in 1995 receiving the Title of Professor from the President of Poland. He became the Honorary Professor of the Saratov State University and the University of Aberdeen and received the Honorary Doctorate from the Lublin University of Technology. Tomasz has been awarded by numerous eminent institutions and obtained two prestigious fellowships funded by the British Council and the Fulbright P. Commission. He was a member of the Council of the National Center of Science, Poland, and recently has been elected as an Ordinary Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Tomasz had a unique opportunity to start his scientific career at the beginning of the 1980 s. It was the time of intensive development of the nonlinear science, and a lot of fundamental ideas have been coined out during this period. Overall, he has published more than 300 papers in scientific journals and 9 books. Tomasz is linking two major areas of nonlinear science, i.e., physics and engineering. His articles are co-authored by 149 scientists from all over the world; among them, one can find a lot of eminent researchers. Due to a very broad area of Tomasz scientific activity, we list just a few his main achievements: • Identification and description of the influence of random noise on the chaotic behaviour of nonlinear systems; • development of methods of control and synchronization of chaotic systems; • enabling the practical application of chaos in technical issues identifying the sources of randomness in mechanical systems; • analysis of the synchronization process and chimera states in mechanical systems. Tomasz strongly supported younger colleagues. He has supervised 12 Ph.D. students, and most of them are

currently successful scholars. Moreover, his former Ph.D. students already promoted 11 Ph.D.s. All of them created a well-established Kapitaniak’s scientific school of nonlinear dynamics in Lodz. Tomasz s
