way to utilize economically the material and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. “Design establishes and defines solutions to and pertinent structure for problems not solved before, or new solutions to problems which have previously been solved in a different way”. “The ability to design is both a science and an art”. The science can be learned through techniques and methods, but the art is best learned by doing design. It is for this reason for our design experience must involve some realistic project experience. To become proficient in design is a perfectly attainable goal for an engineering student, but its attainment requires the guided experience. Design should not be confused with discovery. E can discover what has already existed but has not been known before. But a design is the product of planning and work. Good design requires both analysis and synthesis. The challenges presented by the design environment are to think of the C’s of design creativity, complexity, choice and compromise.
1.2 Fans for Boiler Applications In engineering application fans are used mainly to produce a flow from one point to another, movement of air or gas itself may be the primary object, but often the gas is merely medium for carrying heat, cold, moisture etc., or solid substances like ash or saw dust. Fan can be defined as a volumetric machine which pumps like, moves quantities of gas or air from one place to another. Physically a fan is a machine fitted with a rotating wheel (called as impeller), which does work upon gas or air flowing through it and a housing to collect the incoming air or gas and direct it flows. Fans are used in boilers for different applications such as supplying air for combustion, removable of combustion products, air for cooling of equipment working at hot zones and so on. Fans are designed according to the function they do in boiler induced draft fan, forced draft fan, primary air fan, gas re-circulation fan, sealing air fan, and so on. Depending upon the direction of flow of the medium at outlet with respect to rotational axis, fans are broadly classified into axial fans and radial fans. Axial flow may be described as a fan in which the flow of air is substantially parallel to the axis of the impeller. In radial flow fans, the air is drawn into the center of the revolving wheel or impeller turns through 90º i.e. in perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
