The field of hernia surgery has changed markedly within the past decade. Today, every patient and every surgeon has the choice between various techniques and devices to repair inguinal, incisional or hiatal hernias. Lots of publications confirm, that most of them can be applied with success. The overall low recurrence rates published make it difficult to decide, which one is the best. In Germany, despite marked changes of repair techniques and the use of meshes in more than 60% of the patients we still have to face a constant rate of recurrent inguinal hernias of more than 12%.
