If you’ve managed to stumble upon these notes, either as an educator or a student, odds are that you’ve heard of relativity, Einstein’s famous theory of space, time, and gravitation. It is arguably his most celebrated accomplishment in physics, and it is certainly one of the most important ideas to emerge in physics in the twentieth century. Broadly speaking, relativity unifies space and time into a single entity, the geometry of which is determined by the gravitational fields emanating from massive objects in the universe. There are plenty of popular science books and instructional videos that will give you this brief description of relativity, perhaps also telling you about some of the amazing consequences of the theory, such as time dilation or black holes. Here, we want to go further, by diving into the nuts and bolts of relativity and developing a deep understanding of these phenomena and how they come about.
