It w a s s h o w n b y X-ray diffraction that the ordering has been practically c o m p l e t e d , a n d t h e 001 p o l e d e n s i t y of t h e o r d e r e d p h a s e w a s h i g h e s t in t h e p l a n e p e r p e n d i c u l a r t o t h e compression axis, i.e., the same preferred orientat i o n a s i n F i g . 1 w a s a l s o f o r m e d in t h i s c a s e . It c a n b e i n f e r r e d on t h e b a s i s of t h e e x p e r i m e n t t h a t , u n d e r t h e i n f l u e n c e of a l o a d , n u c l e i of the o r d e r e d p h a s e f o r m w i t h t h e p r e f e r r e d o r i e n t a t i o n in t h e e a r l y s t a t e of o r d e r i n g w h e r e t h e s u p e r l a t t i c e l i n e s a r e a l m o s t i m p e r c e p t i b l e . A n d t h e n u c l e i g r o w to f o r m the a b o v e - m e n t i o n e d t e x t u r e t h r o u g h t h e s u b s e q u e n t tempering without any load. Since the principal axes in the ordered phase coinc i d e w i t h t h o s e in t h e m a t r i x d i s o r d e r e d p h a s e , 2 it c a n easily be understood qualitatively that the strain energ3r, r e l a t i n g t o t h e c o h e r e n c y b e t w e e n t h e n u c l e i a n d t h e m a t r i x , w o u l d b e l o w e s t if t h e n u c l e i h a d t h e preferred orientation. The strain energy for the coh e r e n c y d e p e n d s o n t h e t e t r a g o n a l i t y a n d on t h e e l a s t i c s t r a i n , b e s i d e t h e o r i e n t a t i o n r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n the n u c l e i a n d t h e m a t r i x . T h e f o r m e r r e l a t e s to t h e t e m perature, and the latter to the load. A Au-Cu alloy and a Pd-Fe alloy were also temp e r e d u n d e r l o a d .
