In systemic functional linguistics (e.g., Halliday 2014: 88), the clause is envisaged textually as having the character of a message, or quantum of information in the flow of discourse: It takes on some form of structure so that it fits in with, and contributes to, the flow of discourse. The structure that carries this line of meaning is known as thematic structure. Thematic structure is a major aspect of how speakers and writers organize their messages in a way which makes them integrate into the unfolding text smoothly. It makes a significant contribution to the coherence of a text, i.e., the connections that listeners or readers perceive in a written or oral text.
