T h e r e f o r e , it i s b e l i e v e d t h a t d u r i n g the e a r l y s t a g e s of f a t i g u e p r o c e s s p o i n t d e f e c t s p l a y an i m p o r t a n t r o l e . 1 The n a t u r e and c o n c e n t r a t i o n of t h e s e d e f e c t s , g e n e r a t e d by c y c l i c l o a d i n g , c a n b e s t u d i e d by m e a n s of r e s i s t i v i t y m e a s u r e m e n t s . 2-7 T h e p u r p o s e of t h i s c o m m u n i c a t i o n is to r e p o r t o u r p r e l i m i n a r y r e s u l t s on the r e s i s t i v i t y c h a n g e s in p o l y c r y s t a l l i n e c o p p e r d u r i n g the i n i t i a l s t a g e of f a t i g u e at a m b i e n t t e m p e r a t u r e a n d the s u b s e q u e n t i s o t h e r m a l a n n e a l i n g of the e x c e s s r e s i s t i v i t y . P o l y c r y s t a l l i n e c o p p e r of 99.999 pct p u r i t y in the f o r m of 14 9 2 r a i l d i a m e t e r w i r e s , 12 in. in l e n g t h , w e r e u s e d in t h e s e e x p e r i m e n t s . T h e s a m p l e s w e r e v a c u u m a n n e a l e d at 475~ f o r 1 h r and f u r n a c e c o o l e d to r o o m t e m p e r a t u r e . F a t i g u e e x p e r i m e n t s w e r e p e r f o r m e d in a s p e c i a l l y c o n s t r u c t e d u n i a x i a l t e n s i o n r e l a x a t i o n l o a d i n g d e v i c e . T h e e n t i r e s a m p l e and the l o a d i n g a s s e m b l y w e r e s u b m e r g e d in a t e m p e r a t u r e c o n t r o l l e d (•176 p a r a f i n oil b a t h . S t r e s s a m p l i t u d e v a r i e d f r o m 0 to 1000 p s i at a f r e q u e n c y of 35 c p s . R e s i s t a n c e m e a s u r e m e n t s w e r e m a d e by u s i n g a f o u r p r o b e K e l v i n b r i d g e with a s e n s i t i v i t y of 0.1 p o h m . All measurements were made in situ. F i g . 1 s h o w s the n o r m a l i z e d r e l a t i v e i n c r e a s e in e l e c t r i c a l r e s i s t i v i t y a s a f u n c t i o n of the n u m b e r of f a t i g u e c y c l e s . T h i s c u r v e r e p r e s e n t s the a v e r a g e v a l u e s f o r 13 s a m p l e s . It is q u i t e a p p a r e n t t h a t , f o r the c y c l i c s t r e s s - a m p l i t u d e u s e d in t h i s e x p e r i m e n t , " the r e s i s t i v i t y i n c r e a s e s r a p i d l y d u r i n g the i n i t i a l s t a g e and t h e n a t t a i n s a s a t u r a t i o n v a l u e at a b o u t 7 • 104 c y c l e s .
