Preface and Acknowledgements
This monograph was inspired by debates about precarity and insecurity that I encountered with increasing frequency and intensity in various social movements from the late 1990s. The argument seemed to be that recent decades had witnessed a relentless growth of precarity, focused on the world of employment, and that this was undermining the capacity of workers to struggle against their conditions or the social forces giving rise to those conditions. Traditional radical arguments, emphasising workers’ potential power, were stood on their head. Now workers were portrayed as abject victims of a profound restructuring of the economy accompanying neoliberalism. A few penetrating critiques of the concept of precarity already existed by the time I began my research, along with an empirical literature analysing specific aspects of insecurity, contingent employment and so on. My aim in this book was to build on that research by detailing the major trends across the labour force of a single country, in this case the UK,
