Review of Analytical Mechanics

This chapter treats simple structural members based on two different analytical approaches. On the one hand based on fundamental equations of continuum mechanics, i.e., the kinematics, the equilibrium and the constitutive equation, the describing partial

Preface to the Second Edition

The pedagogical methodology proposed in the first edition has been well accepted by students and the scientific community. The second edition has been extended by more than 40 pages. Many additional examples on the refined analysis and different modifications of extensometers have been included. Last but not least, the entire content and the graphical illustrations have been thoroughly revised and updated. Esslingen, Germany July 2020

Preface to the First Edition

This book presents a novel concept for introducing the finite element method, applied in the context of solid mechanics. It presents a major conceptual shift, i.e., taking away lengthy theoretical derivations from the face-to-face interaction with students, focusing on the summary of key equations and concepts, and to practice these on well-chosen example proble
