Following the remarkable economic growth in the past few decades, Vietnam has experienced rapid urbanisation. In 1986, Vietnam had fewer than 13 million urban residents. From 2000 to 2010, its urban population increased by about 8 million, representing an annual growth rate of over 4%. This was one of the fastest growth rates recorded in East Asia (World Bank 2015).1 By 2014, Vietnam’s urban population had already reached 30 million—more than double its low base in 1986 (see chapter “Rural–Urban Migration in Vietnam: Trend and Institutions”).
