SCANDIUM ALLOYING OF ALUMINUM ALLOYS V. V. Zakharov,1 Yu. A. Filatov,1 and I. A. Fisenko1 Translated from Metallovedenie i Termicheskaya Obrabotka Metallov, No. 8, pp. 31 – 36, August, 2020.
Basic physical metallurgy principles of alloying of aluminum alloys with scandium are considered and the fundamentals of the production of deformed semiproducts from these alloys are discussed. The discussion is based on the expected widening of the range of application of deformed semiproducts from scandium-alloyed aluminum alloys.
Key words: aluminum alloy, joint alloying with scandium and zirconium, principles of physical metallurgy, fundamentals of technology.
dustrial processes for obtaining scandium and Al – Sc compositions are developed. New and new companies start to produce Al – Sc alloying metal, which starts to lower its cost. The new aluminum alloys sparingly alloyed with scandium contain twice less scandium than the traditional commercial scandium-bearing alloys. 3. The processes of production and treatment of deformed semiproducts from aluminum alloys with scandium do not differ in principle from the active productions and treatments of semiproducts from conventional aluminum alloys. This means that the active metallurgical productions do not require reconstruction for commercial manufacturing of semiproducts from scandium-bearing aluminum alloys. 4. The most important thing is the fact that Russia develops persistently the science-intensive industries requiring new structural materials. This concerns not only the missile, aircraft and power industries but also such civil productions as railway, metro, and monorail transport, the building industry, oil and gas extraction, etc. Application of aluminum alloys with scandium in these fields makes it possible to raise the performance characteristics of the articles and to create principally novel assemblies and parts due to the unique combination of superplasticity, self-hardenability, and weldability of the materials. We have all grounds to expect growing interest of domestic producers in scandium-alloyed aluminum alloys. The aim of the present paper was to generalize and develop the metallurgical principles of alloying of aluminum alloys with scandium and to substantiate scientifically the production of
INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloys with scandium have been patented in the USA in 1971 [1]. The patent contained experimental data proving a strong strengthening effect of scandium. Later works of Soviet and Russian specialists [2 – 8] confirmed the fact of strong influence of scandium on the structure and properties of aluminum and some aluminum alloys primarily of the Al – Mg and Al – Zn – Mg systems and determined the mechanisms of this influence [7 – 14]. The first commercial alloy where scandium was used as a principal alloying component was created in the USSR in the late 1970s [15]. Today the commercial compositions of aluminum alloys with this alloying component possess a unique combination of properties [16 – 20]. Despite
