This is an amoral book. We are not going to tell the reader what he or she (or his or her department) should be hoping to achieve with respect to the delivery of healthcare services. Instead, our approach is to describe how to determine what it is you are actually doing and, from there, how to optimize your efforts so you are accomplishing everything you want to accomplish. Who should read this book? You may not realize that you need this information. Managing a radiology department is not likely to be part of the training received by the doctors, nurses, or technologists who work in the department. While the radiologist’s role today can encompass economic gatekeeping, patient safety, quality-of-care improvement, and information technology [1], radiology training programs are only just beginning to consider these issues.
