Foreword

It is a great pleasure to write this Foreword for this volume edited by my former pupil Professor Sudhir Sopory, who came to my laboratory for work toward his doctoral degree back in the late 1960s. Not all teachers have the longevity and good fortune of seeing their former pupils grow for such a long period – I am 86 now. Sudhir Sopory was among the founding group after I returned from Caltech in the early 1960s. I was member of the faculty of a department at the University of Delhi whose beginning is intimately linked with the British Raj and the Empire and which greatly benefited by the direct attention given by the imperial government during the 1930s and 1940s. (If I can expand a bit, it so happens the main building of the University of Delhi, an iconic structure, was indeed originally the Viceroy’s residence and the surrounding campus the Viceregal Estate – but later as the new capital, New Delhi got ready in the early 1930s, the Majesty’s Government decided to give over the old lodge and the surrounding estate to start the University of Delhi.)
