A book about how social relationships come to form small businesses and what this means for societies and their development might be thought unusual on two counts. The first is its accent on relationships: meat and drink to the novelist; matters of occasional interest to the academic (especially the historian and the anthropologist); and for each of us the bread and butter of daily life; but not the means to uncover, comprehend, or explain the great shifts and movements across societies that development entails. The second is its emphasis on small businesses and their use as an entrée into the matter of development. After all, development is more generally understood to be about the growing maturity of government and administration, strengthening civil society, and more ambitious infrastructure and health programs, as well as about economic growth.
