My mother, Patricia Nielsen, whose strength in the face of his passing and other adversities, is a perpetual source of inspiration for me.

This book would not have been completed without the help and support of far too many people to list here. During my time at the University of California, Santa Barbara, I benefited from the guidance of Richard Appelbaum and received constructive feedback from him on my research as it progressed.
