The three and a half years during which I worked on this book had naturally their ups and downs—with the former certainly overweighing. I had the privilege to conduct my research on the beautiful Isles of Scilly and temporarily also based in Cornwall. But apart from the natural environment, many people helped me to motivate, progress, rethink, present, discuss and, thus, finally accomplish my research. First of all, I would like to thank Prof. Beate Ratter who introduced me to the world of island studies, advised me and constantly pushed my research forward. I thank Prof. Catherine Leyshon and Prof. Stephan Harrison for the additional academic support and the opportunity to enhance my research with a stay at the Cornwall Campus of the University of Exeter. In Cornwall, I certainly want to thank also Kevin, as well as Sasa, for the great time
