1 Child Benefit figures are taken from the Child Benefit Computer System 5% scan in the months shown. Figures exclude overseas cases. 2 Child Benefit is the responsibility of HM Revenue and Customs. 3 Jobseeker’s Allowance figures have been derived by applying 100% WPLS propor tions to 5% data. This figure is based on Contribution Based only Jobseekers Allowance. All jobseeker’s Allowance statistics were revised in May 2008 following improvements to methodology. 4 November 2007 Jobseekers Allowance figures are unavailable due to an embargo on the transfer of data to the department. 5 The figures for Incapacity Benefit are calculated from 100% counts but are provisional and therefore subject to amendment. 6 From 27th October 2008, new claims to Incapacity Benefit can also be allocated on incapacity grounds, to the newly introduced Employment and

Decreasing numbers of new claimants to Incapacity Benefit will be seen from herein. 7 Since October 2003, Income Support for claimants aged 60 or over have been paid via the new Pension Credit. Pension Credit eligibility is also more generous than prior to 6th October 2003, increasing the numbers of pensioners in receipt. 8 Includes all Widow’s Benefit and Bereavement Benefit except Widow’s Payment and Bereavement Payment. Excludes overseas and Channel Island cases. 9 WB and BB figures are obtained from 100% Work and Pensions Longitudinal Data. Sources: Department for Work and Pensions; HM Revenue and Customs
