Preface

The main objective of this book is to present a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the shock-induced dynamic fracture phenomenon known as spall fracture. Spall fracture is of practical importance in virtually all applications involving rapid loading by explosives, impact, or energy deposition. It is also of scientific importance in studies of the elementary strength of materials because the extremely high loading rates prevalent during spall experiments make it possible to attain stress levels that approach the theoretical strength of the material. Due to its pract
