Zehner notes that short courses have proved to be one of the most popular features of the Annual Meeting. "The first such course was a single offering two years ago," he says. "Interest was so keen that two more were added last year. This year's plans call for another trebling, and there was interest expressed in several other topics which for various reasons didn't gel into a proposed course."
STUDENT AWARDS
At present, plans call for nine courses: Surface and Thin Film Analysis Ion Implantation Into Metals Ion Implantation Into Semiconductors Liquid-phase Epitaxy Techniques Molecular Beam Epitaxy Chemical Vapor Deposition Vacuum Technology Pumping Hazardous Gases Modern Analytical Techniques in Corrosion Research Registration A brochure describing the short courses in more detail will be sent to MRS members shortly. In some instances the level of preregistration may determine whether or not a planned course can be offered, so registration well in advance is encouraged. Specific inquiries about short courses should be directed to the Society's Headquarters in Pittsburgh.

The Materials Research Society announces the availability of 10 awards for graduate students conducting research on a topic to be addressed in the symposia planned for the 1984 Annual Meeting.
• Significant and timely research results, as judged by the chairperson of the appropriate symposium.
The awards consist of a cash grant of $250, to be presented during the Arthur Von Hippel Award ceremony at the meeting, and a waiver of the meeting registration fee.
• An Application Form, available from the Materials Research Society.
The application materials required are:
• An abstract of the relevant thesis, dissertation, or publication.
The criteria for selections are: • Graduate standing in a recognized academic program in materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, physics, chemistry, geology, minerals science, electrical, civil, mechanical, mining, or nuclear engineering, or other materials-related field. • Participation in a research project dealing with one of the symposia topics for the 1984 MRS Annual Meeting. • Outstanding performance in the conduct of this
