STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF LONG-LENGTH WIDE SHEETS OF ALUMINUM ALLOY V95pchT2 T. A. Nechaikina,1 A. L. Ivanov,1 D. V. Gusev,2 and O. Yu. Kozlova1 Translated from Metallovedenie i Termicheskaya Obrabotka Metallov, No. 6, pp. 26 – 32, June, 2020.
A comprehensive research was conducted to study long-length (> 10 m), wide (> 2 m), 7 mm thick sheets of high-strength aluminum alloy V95pch after quenching and “softening” aging according to T2 temper conditions. It is shown that a homogeneous (length- and widthwise) structure, typical for such type of semi-finished products made of alloy V95pch, temper T2, can be sustained in wide, long-length sheets measuring 7 ´ 2300 ´ 12,000 mm, produced using advanced equipment installed at the JSC “AMR.” This results in achieving a level of mechanical, corrosion, and long-term performance characteristics necessary for manufacturing the components of the internal airframe structure of future advanced aircraft.

Metallurgical production of high-strength alloys is quite mature. Such alloys are used for manufacturing of nearly all types of semi-finished products, including clad and unclad sheets, or sheets with one-sided cladding. However, it is important to consider not only the type of a semi-finished product, but also its dimensions to ensure the homogeneity of the structural characteristics and properties (specifically, fracture toughness and corrosion characteristics) length-, width-, and thicknesswise during the manufacturing process [11 – 14]. It is known that for about 30 years there was no production of long (> 10 m), wide (> 2 m) sheets of alloy V95pch, which used to be supplied by the Belokalitvinskii Metallurgical Production Association (OJSC “BKMPO”), currently — JSC “Aluminii Metallurg Rus” (JSC “AMR”), located in Belaya Kalitva, Rostov Region. The regulatory documentation for these products developed in the 1980s has become significantly outdated. Recently, the production equipment has undergone a major upgrade, which made it possible to generally improve the level of properties of the resulting semi-finished products. It is important to point out the specific difference of this type of semi-finished products, since such dimensions (width — 2300 mm; length — > 10 m) are not typical for high-strength aluminum alloy sheets, which requires special equipment for manufacturing and heat treatment of such semi-finished products. This also complicates the process of achieving the structural characteristics necessary to provide
INTRODUCTION High-strength alloys based on the Al – Zn – Mg – Cu system have been highly efficient as structural materials utilized in today’s aviation engineering. They are commonly used in both passenger and transport airplanes (including IL-96, IL-114, TU-204, TU-334, AN-124, AN-225, etc.) as part of the load-carrying structural components operating under compression (e.g.
