Abstract Drill string vibration is an important factor to influence the normal operation of drilling string system, and lateral vibration is the most complex and most severe vibration form. In order to further understand the lateral vibration characteristics of modes and dynamic for drill string, effectively prevent drill string failure, and improve the service life of drill string, a lateral vibration model of a drill string with transverse inertia effect is established. Then the variation trend of lateral vibration natural frequency of drill string under different conditions is analyzed. The analysis results show that under the influence of transverse inertial effect, the lateral vibration natural frequency of drill string is higher than that without considering the transverse inertia effect. At the same time, the natural frequency gradually decreases with the increase of drill string length; the natural frequency starts to increase and then decrease with the increase of borehole diameter, and the natural frequency gradually increases with the increase of the ratio of external and internal diameter of drill string. Introduction In the process of petroleum drilling, drill string system plays an important role. And according to the field experience, it shows that drill string vibration is one of the most important criteria to measure the performance of drill string system [1, 2]. The vibration of drill string is very complicated, and the vibration form is varied. Drill string vibration includes longitudinal vibration, lateral vibration, and torsional vibration. Through the research and field experiment, the related scholars found that the lateral vibration is the most complex and the most serious vibration, which will cause the drill string fatigue damage to accelerate, the change of drill string lateral bending will impact borehole wall, causing the quality of the borehole wall decrease severely [3–8]. Therefore, in order to better understand the lateral vibration characteristics of drill string, provide more reference to solve the problem of drilling string vibration, and prevent drill string failure, it is necessary to further study the lateral vibration of drill string. At present, scholars have made many important achievements in the research of the lateral vibration of drill string.
