Sulphan blue Urticaria in an elderly patient: case report A 77-year-old woman underwent surgical resection of a papillary carcinoma in her right breast. Intraoperatively, she received sulphan blue 8mL [dosage not stated] to define the associated lymphatic damage. By the time the wound was closed, she had developed blue hives on both her upper arms and her chest from an allergic reaction to the sulphan blue dye. She received IV phenylephrine. She recovered uneventfully and was discharged 4 hours later. Author comment: "[T]he cause is probably a type I, IgEmediated hypersensitivity to the dye." O’Sullivan MJ, et al. Blue hives.
