Surface Waves and Instabilities in Plane Charged Interfaces

Besides the Coulomb force, exerted by an electric field on free charge injected into liquid dielectrics, there is another mechanism of EHD motion caused by surface interface electric tensions. So this type of electroconvection arises when a liquid is in c

PREFACE

This book deals with Electrohydrodynamics ( EHD) which is an interdisciplinary science dealing with the interaction offluids with electric fields. It is addressed to scientists, engineers and students possessing a basic knowledge of mathematics and physics. It may be particularly useful to the practising fluid dynamicists, chemical and electrical engineers who need to understand and apply the principles of electrohydrodynamics in their daily work. The book is the outcome of a series of lectures on EHD delivered at the Seventh IUTAM (International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) Summer School held in Udine, Italy in July 1996. This Summer School was proposed to the General Assembly of IUTAM by the Centre International des Sciences Mecaniques (CISM). With this decision IUTAM has recognized the rapid development and increasing importance of Electrohydrodynmics both from the fundamental and applied point of view. The book consists of five parts. In Part I the foundations of EHD are established for the case of homogeneous liquid dielectrics. In the first three chapters of Part II conduction phenomena are dealt in depth, followed by a discussion of surface waves on charged inteifaces, and EHD pumping in the last two chapters. In the first chapter of Part III conduction is reviewed again for liquids used in applications. Then instabilities, pre-breakdown and breakdown phenomena, and el
